First off, they are called &#8220;Mexican Husk Tomatoes&#8221;, although they aren&#8217;t tomatoes. The fruit itself it surronded with a papery husk, which splits when the fruit is ready to eat. It has been described as citrus like, although I personally don&#8217;t like the taste raw.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There is one very good reason to grow this plant: They are exceptionally blight resistant. I had hundreds of tomato plants affected by the late blight this year, and these Tomatillos seem completely unaffected.\u00a0 I will grow them again next year, as some members of my family members enjoy the\u00a0 peculiar flavor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a recipe suggested by a friend. Sounds Yummy !\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong><span style=\"color:#339966;\">Barbara Zowada\u2019s Green Chili<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\nBrown in hot oil in a Dutch oven:<br \/>\n3 lbs. boneless Pork cut into 1\u201d cubes<br \/>\n2 large Onions diced<br \/>\n2 cloves Garlic minced<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nAdd:<br \/>\n3 cups Chicken Broth<br \/>\n28 ounce can Tomatillos with liquid (or 3 cups dice fresh)<br \/>\n8 ounce can chopped Green Chilies<br \/>\n\u00bc teaspoon Cayenne Pepper<br \/>\n1 Tablespoon Oregano<br \/>\n1 teaspoon ground Cumin<br \/>\n1 teaspoon Salt<br \/>\n1 cup Water (2 if using fresh tomatillos)<br \/>\n1 teaspoon Chili Powder<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nCover and simmer for 4 hours.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nThicken with a slurry of 2-4 Tablespoons of flour in a small amount of water, bring to a boil.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0Tomatillos are an odd plant.
